2021 Wrap-Up and 2022 Goals

I haven't posted on my account in ages, my last post was last year's wrap-up, even. (So much for my wish that my next post won't be another wrap-up...) I haven't been active on Twitter or Discord either, or in terms of creative work. Haven't really had the time or drive to create anything new sadly. What matters to me is that I made it to the end of the year, all things considered, and fulfilled last year's resolutions.

I think one of the biggest highlights from this year for me was being able to buy myself a Switch and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. (I also got Ring Fit Adventure, but I haven't gotten around playing it yet, especially with BotW being my focus.) Zelda has been one of my favorite franchises and being able to finally experience BotW had been exciting. I've had a blast with the game so far, it really is an amazing experience. Easily the best open world game I've played, and it's my favorite Zelda next to Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. I also bought a few Amiibo. I don't plan to expand my collection too far, but I think I am starting to see why people love figures and collecting them. They look surprisingly nice too.

I'm going to keep my New Year's Resolution simple:
  • Stay alive
  • Earn my Master's degree
  • Do my best to be a good person

To be honest, I'm not expecting miracles from next year, but I want to try to keep my chin up. Whenever I can.

And with that, I wish anyone reading this a Happy New Year.

2020 Wrap-Up and 2021 Goals

A whole year has gone by, and my last post on here was... Last year's wrap up? Hell, with this accursed year, I'm happy that I'm able to make a post in the first place.

2019 Wrap-Up and 2020 Goals

It's that time of the year, so it's time for one of those reflection posts. But it's not just the end of 2019, but the end of a whole decade. So I suppose this post doubles as looking back on my life in the past decade, too.

2019 September Blender Art

Here are my Blender renders I posted on my Twitter back in September, but didn't crosspost here.

I wanted to get back to learning Blender in September, since Blender 2.8 came out in the summer and it felt like a great time to play around with even better tools. Alas, university took up my time so I suppose this is it for this year.

A creature sitting in a field

Is it a feline? Is it a bovine? I made this creature with no answer in mind! It is what you see it as. Seeing people's guesses for this one was pretty fun.

My Thoughts on World of Final Fantasy (Maxima)

While Final Fantasy IX was my first mainline FF game, I may or may not have played another game before it, which was a memorable part of my childhood: Chocobo Racing. I fell in love with the cute rendition of recurring characters such as Chocobo, Moogle and Bahamut, even though I wasn't familiar with the references to previous games, or the franchise's shared lore elements. Roughly 20 years later, I have several FF games under my belt, and World of Final Fantasy offered a chance to revisit the feelings Chocobo Racing evoked in me. A crossover game with a super adorable aesthetic? Sign me right up! To make it even sweeter, WoFF is the Pokemon game I didn't know I wanted so much.

My Thoughts on Final Fantasy Type-0 HD

After I was done with the XIII trilogy (AKA the Lightning saga), my friend wanted me to try out Type-0 next, which is another entry in the Fabula Nova Crystallis series. The game originally came out on the PSP, and was later released for consoles and PC as Type-0 HD. The game took me a while to get into at first, but I ended up having much more fun with it than I anticipated. And so, here are my thoughts.

Playing with Gradients: Cath Palug Fanart

I felt like drawing today, so I fired up Clip Studio Paint and got right to it. I didn't really plan for this picture, my starting point was my desire to play with colors, so I thought gradients could be a fun subject. I also felt like my previous avatar could be improved upon. I already did Chatnoir, so I picked Omniscience Dragon, Cath Palug to draw this time. Roughly 7 hours later, here's my final result and I'm really happy with how it turned out! (I wish Twitter didn't ruin my upload over there... that bummed me out.)

2018 Wrap-Up and 2019 Goals

It's the end of the year. People have been doing posts on Twitter such as "Top 3 personal accomplishments" and listing their goals for the next year. They inspired me to write a reflection post. I figured it would help me close the book on the unpleasant parts of 2018 and feel more optimistic and excited for 2019.

My Thoughts on Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

I've Platinumed the game as of yesterday, so I can finally put the game down. It's time for my review! A game about the end of the world, just in time for the end of the year. Heh. Ahem.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is the final part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis trilogy, and the conclusion of the Lightning Saga. It's been one hell of a wild and entertaining ride, so I'm jumping into my thoughts right away.

My Thoughts on Final Fantasy XIII-2

I managed to wrap up my playthrough of Final Fantasy XIII-2, the second game in the Fabula Nova Crystallis trilogy. While I'm super excited to move on to Lightning Returns, I wanted to write up my thoughts on XIII-2 first.

XIII-2 can be summed up as this: what if Final Fantasy got together with Chrono Trigger/Cross and had a baby? This game. All while improving on many parts where XIII fell short.
Full review below. Spoilers for the entirety of XIII-2, including the DLC! )

Introduction Post

Hi everyone!

I'm Arynis, and I've joined Dreamwidth thanks to the Tumblr purge. Not just that, but other issues also made my time at the site more difficult, such as any external link hiding my posts from tag searches. Tumblr wasn't meant for longer posts either, which is my preferred format. In the end, I'm happy to be in a place where I can happily write away once more.

I'm an Administrator of Neo Ark Cradle, a forum focused around the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise and Bushiroad's TCGs to a smaller extent. I'm also a staff member of Cardfight Coalition, a sister site of YGOrganization that focuses on Cardfight!! Vanguard. I've previously worked in the gaming industry, so one of my goals is working on my gamedev skillset. I've been dabbling in Blender and learning 3D modeling.

I've been chronicling my journey in Blender and post any models I create. I'm planning to do the same for gamedev in the future. I also enjoy talking about media I consume. I have no concrete posting schedule, I post when I have anything to share. To kick off my time on here, I ported my noteworthy posts from my Tumblr.

My blog is public, but anything personal is limited to friends only.

You can also find me on Twitter and Mastodon.

Lastly, here's a fanart of Chatnoir I drew to celebrate my move! 😺 Thank you for reading!

My Thoughts on Final Tantasy XIII

I used to know not much about the Fabula Nova Crystallis trilogy, save for it being bad and the development being a disaster. A friend of mine has been recommending me the series and showed me some arguments that ultimately got me interested in playing the games. I've finished the first game out of the three, so here are my thoughts.

In a nutshell, the game surprised me in many ways and it was very much an experience to play it. It's high on my list despite its egregious flaws.
Full review beyond the cut. Here be spoilers for the entire game! )

Blender Practice: Snake

It's been a while since I last did anything in Blender. It's on my list to review the course lessons to refresh my memory, but I wanted to try making something regardless. So here's this snake.

It's not an optimal model, but I had fun working on it!

Blender Practice: Dragon Statue

I had another go at the dragon head model because I felt the original version was too busy and clunky. I wanted to see how I can do now compared to that. Added a comparison picture for reference.

I'll have yet another go at this down the line and try to improve further.

Ary Learns Blender: Part Three

I finished Section Three in the Blender course I've been following! The gist of this part has been modeling a bowling ball and a bowling pin. Using those models, I learned the basics of materials as well physics in Blender.

Ary Learns Blender: Part Two

I've finished Section 2 of the Blender course I've been following!

I've learned about additional editing and controls. One of my earlier tasks was making a plane to see how extruding from faces worked.

Ary Learns Blender: Part One

It's been a while since I've last posted anything of note. I spent the summer resting and recuperating. Taking a step back after my exams and everything else helped immensely and I've been doing better overall.

One thing I promised myself is that I'd work on bettering myself and learn new skills. What surprised me is that I ended up gravitating towards 3D modeling. I had no interest in 3D before and preferred drawing art. On the other hand, I'm not that surprised. Building sets was one of my favorite tasks in the past, so the idea of putting something together was very much attractive. I ended up purchasing a few Udemy courses, installed Blender and began my journey.

Most of the lectures so far centered around learning the interface. Coming off Unity, customizing my layout and moving the camera around in an editor felt familiar. One of my challenges was to put something together using basic meshes, so here's my attempt at my first creation:

Revisiting Danganronpa V3 - A Second Review

Roughly a year ago, I posted my impressions about the game after having watched a livestream of the final chapter and read translations/summaries. I recently took the plunge and bought the game despite my negativity from back then. My feelings on V3 and its twists changed over time, and my friend who shared my opinions with me at the time also encouraged me to get it, because it was still worth playing it. So I did, might as well see it with the full context and buildup, eh?

Initial Danganronpa V3 Impressions

I've been pretty stoked for DRV3 and while I initially wanted to stay blind, I decided to take the plunge and find more out about the game. I've watched a livestream of Chapter 6 and read a few summaries circulating around, so I might be going off not fully accurate info. In any case, here are my thoughts.
